3-2-1 Gelzheiser Chapter 4 &12 Three things that I have learned from reading these chapters would be the power of strategic summarization, promoting student engagement through choice and relevance and fostering collaboration and peer support. Chapter 4 emphasizes the importance of strategic summarization as a comprehension tool. By teaching students to identify key ideas, to eliminate irrelevant information, and condense text into concise summaries, educators can provide them with a valuable strategy for understanding complex material. This learning will influence my teaching practice by prompting me to combine explicit instruction and practice opportunities for summarizing across many different reading materials. I will continue to encourage students to ask critical questions, identify main points and supporting details, and showcase understanding through direct summaries. Another thing that stuck out to me was the idea of promoting student engagement through choice and relevance. This came from chapter 12 which highlights the critical role of student choice and relevance in fostering engagement and motivation. This is done by providing students with opportunities to choose reading materials that align with their interests and prior knowledge, so that the educators can create a more personalized and engaging learning environment. This way of learning will influence my teaching practice by prompting me to continue to diversify my reading materials that I give my students and incorporate student choice whenever possible. I will still continue to connect reading selections to students' lives and interests, encouraging them to make personal connections and find meaning in the reading experience. The last thing that I learned from reading these chapters would be fostering collaboration and peer support. In both of the Gelzheiser chapters they emphasize the benefits of collaborative learning and peer support in reading comprehension. When you allow students to work together
and provide feedback to one another, teachers can create a supportive learning environment that promotes a deeper understanding. This learning will influence my teaching practice by encouraging me to include more collaborative activities into my instruction. I will continue to create opportunities for students to work in pairs or small groups so they can continue engaging in activities like shared reading and peer review to support each other's learning and development. The two connections that I have made from my own classroom experience to this reading would be the 321 strategy in metacognitive awareness as well as differentiation and the power of choice. In my experience in the classroom setting the 321 strategy allows for the students who have a deeper engagement with the text and the opportunity to understand more complex texts than they normally would have. Throughout my course of being in this classroom I have had the opportunity to do these assignments and they have led me to have a more enhanced understanding of complex texts that are necessary for the class and for my betterment as a student. It allows the students to have more self-assessment and it taps into their metacognitive thinking. Another connection that I have made was differentiation and the power of choice and chapter 12 it definitely emphasizes differentiated instruction and providing students with the choice that can align with prior knowledge and assist with the experience in personalized learning. In the classroom setting that I am in I find that when you offer student choices whether it is in activities, reading materials or even the way that they learn it definitely increases their motivation and more importantly their engagement which leads to more successful learning outcomes for them. When in a learning environment it is always important to try to cater to the
needs of your students because that aid in their future success and their motivation in the learning environment. One critical quote that I have from these reading would be "Reading motivation is multifaceted and is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including student characteristics, instructional practices, and the classroom environment." (Gelzheiser et al., 2019, p. 178)I chose this quote because it sums up how complex fostering motivation in young readers can be. It also highlights the fact that motivation is not a singular thing but rather made of numerous factors. It encourages teachers to move beyond simple solutions and unique approach to catering to reading motivation.
