PCN 474-Treatment of Addiction and Substance Use Disorders- Children and Adolescents College of Humanities and Human Services, Grand Canyon University Taylor M. Shiers December 11, 2023
Topic 1 Discussion Question 1 Hello Professor Johnson and Class, "Developmental studies suggest that as the adolescent brain undergoes significant neuromaturation it is particularly susceptible to damage caused by acute and chronic effects of alcohol" (Castellanos-Ryan, O'Leary-Barrett, & Conrod, 2023, p7). Due to this, risky behaviors are likely to develop due to an increase in dopaminergic energy and sensation-seeking which leads to neurodegeneration of the. Hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Social development delays and problems such as "school dropout, higher risk for assault, and suicide" (Castellanos-Ryan et al, 2012, p4) are prevalent among adolescents that abuse alcohol. Behavioral problems such as conduct disorder, depression, and anxiety can be linked with adolescent substance use. Adolescents that internalize their problems and use substances are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety while adolescents that externalize their problems and use substances are more likely to suffer from conduct disorders (Castellanos-Ryan et al, 2013). Adolescent substance use can carry over into adulthood "and is associated with a compromised ability to develop mature adult occupational roles and interpersonal relationships that are not sustainable" (Piehler, Véronneau, & Dishion, 2012, p2). Depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, and mood disorders can all carry over into adulthood from adolescent substance use. Taylor Castellanos-Ryan, N., O'Leary-Barrett, M., & Conrod, P. J. (2013).
