The 3 Salient Music Festivals of the 1960s… Monterey

1) Together, these three events capture some of the best

These outdoor concerts, along with others of the era represented the culmination of psychedelic rock
, as well as everything related to the 1960’s countercultural movement, itself.

In the ‘60s, people united to celebrate music, free love, psychedelia
, higher levels of consciousness, and anti-establishment values.
2) After the success of the Human Be-In that was held in San Francisco in January of 1967, some rock entrepreneurs were inspired to create a music festival that would specifically celebrate rock music

-This would establish a trend for the late 1960’s as a new hunger for outdoor rock concerts would then develop. The popularity of Monterey and word of its success would soon spread to other members of the U.S. counterculture.
3) Entertainment promoter Lou Adler
put together a team of organizers and established a board of directors to proceed with developing this new rock
festival for Monterey, California. 4) Motown
singer & songwriter Smokey Robinson
was on the festival board and helped in the organization and planning of the event. – (Sidenote): Robinson was a respected musician and was also known for his keen ability to swiftly organize concert
events, as he had served as VP of Motown Records since the label first began in 1959.
5) Michelle Phillips and John Phillips of the ___Mamas & the Papas_
were lead organizers, as well, of Monterey ‘67.
6) Monterey was not new to the idea of music events . . .
It had already been hosting its own annual jazz festival
since 1958.
