1 What are the Pros and Cons of Daylight Savings Time Melissa Albright The University of Arizona Global Campus GEN103: Information Literacy Agnes Pearcy November 28, 2023
2 Introduction Only some people are fans of Daylight Savings time. Daylight Savings Time, or DST, begins on the second Sunday of March when we move our clocks ahead one hour and ends on the first Sunday of November when the clock moves back one hour—this change of time dates all the way back to 1895. Factors related to DST include the pros, cons, and sleeping disorders. Pros of Daylight Savings Time One pro of having daylight savings time is that it allows for more daylight. The longer hours promote safer driving, providing for fewer car accidents ( Top 3 Pros and Cons of Daylight-Saving Time, 2023) . Also with the longer daylight, it also allows an extra hour of daylight for sports and more ( Malow, B. A., & Malow, B., 2023). With fewer car accidents, it means there are lower car insurance rates. More daylight allows for more time for exercise and dog walking. It also provides for fewer criminal acts because daylight is longer than usual. In conclusion, there are a few pros of DST and many like it. Cons of Daylight Savings Time One con of daylight savings time is that with one less hour of sleep it can be an issue when it comes to one’s health. According to Top 3 Pros and Cons of Daylight Saving Time (2023) , even though it is one hour difference, it can go against one’s circadian rhythm. There are also reports showing that it increases cluster headaches. There were even reports stating that there was 1/10 increase in heart attacks after the daylight savings time took place. There are reports that car accidents rise once the daylight savings time changes to standard time. Therefore, the cons can seem more than the pros for DST. What is the One Main issue with Daylight Savings Time?
3 The main issue with daylight savings time on a person is sleep. Daylight Savings Time goes back to the 1900’s in the US during World War I to give more daylight during the war (eCareers, 2022). Researchers have investigated the effects of the change in time on someone’s body. As stated in the cons of daylight savings time, it can mess with someone’s circadian rhythm. This can cause havoc on a person’s health by causing weight gain, sadness with lack of daylight, and negative issues with the heart. Conclusion My main takeaway from this research process is that I could improve at creating a research paper. I must freshen up my research skills and remember to form a complete paragraph with 5 sentences. Information literacy will help my academic success by ensuring I can find good resources. It will also help me in my professional success if I have to read a book or article, I can make sure it is credible. Overall, I have noticed that I need to work on my paper-writing skills.
