HUM 100 Module Five Short Answer: Skills in the Humanities 2 The cultural work that I selected is the Egyptian hieroglyphics. Egyptian hieroglyphics was a writing system that was used by ancient Egyptians to represent their language. Egyptian hieroglyphics were once believed to be considered “holy writing” (Scoville, 2022). Because of this, Egyptians used hieroglyphics to communicate and to keep record of important events. Hieroglyphics date back to nearly 3200 BC, but the last hieroglyphic inscription was used some 3500 years later. Although symbols/pictures were used in hieroglyphics, they are not considered picture writing. Due to the number of signs used for hieroglyphics, there were over a thousand different hieroglyphics used at first (Scoville, 2022). The hieroglyphic system created by the Egyptians had a major impact on their culture at the time. They had the ability to record events which are now considered an important piece of history. They were able to communicate with each other in writing form instead of verbally communicating. Over the years, writing has changed drastically, but in order to understand things from the past, we need to have a better understanding of how certain things came to be and in this case, its how different languages, forms of communication and record keeping were formed.
