HUM 100 Module Six Short Answer: Human Culture 2 The creator that I have selected from the twentieth century is Pablo Picasso. Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Spain and is one of the most known artists of the twentieth century. Picasso spent most of his life in France where he created over 20,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and ceramics as well as costumes and theater sets (Pablo Picasso). Picassos “The Blue Period” was created between 1900 and 1904. During this time, his paintings were created using shades of blue and blue-green and sometimes other warmer colors (1901 to 1904). The paintings represent a dull, depressing time as many of the paintings included poverty, instability, the old, frail and the blind, beggars, drunks, and prostitutes. (1901 to 1904). The work created was influenced by a trip to Spain and the suicide of a close friend. Although Picasso was not there when his friend committed suicide, it played a major role in the Blue Period. The Blue Period not only represented the way others lived and felt, but it also represented a time when Picasso was struggling. The Old Guitarist is a painting that represents Picasso himself, “the struggle and sympathy for the plight of the downtrodden; he knew what it was like to be poor, having been nearly penniless during all of 1902” (Picasso). Many questions can be asked about human culture when looking at Picassos’ Blue Period work. What was happening in France and Spain at the time to cause such deep depression? What was culture like at the time? How did society react towards Picassos Blue Period work? Were members of society offended by the work he created? What story does the work tell? Bigger questions that may have influenced Picassos Blue Period work could be: What way can expression be shown? What is the best way to depict poverty, depression, and sorrow? What inspiration can be found in this work? How can this work help influence society to do better?
