HUM 100 Module Eight Short Answer: Belief System and Ethics 2 In city of Segovia Spain, there is a local legend that believes the devil is responsible for its aqueduct. The story is, a girl tasked with hauling heavy buckets of water across steep streets propositioned the devil to create a means to carry water for the girl. The devil said if he could finish the job before the night was over, the girl had to pay him, with her soul. The devil started stacking brick by brick. Watching this, the girl started to pray for her soul, knowing the devil may win. It worked. And according to legend, the devil was one brick away from completing the aqueduct before the nights end. (Magazine, 2019) To pay tribute to the story and the aqueduct, a sculpture of a devil was created. Looking at the sculpture you see the devil with a smile on his face. Some people say that the devil “lured” tourist there. Growing up a Catholic, I can see why some believe the statue is offense and would want it removed. Catholics were taught to believe that the devil was evil, the author of lies, one that promoted evil and manipulated others in to doing his bidding. Creating a statue of the devil to pay respect to is something that Catholics may find disrespectful. Catholics of Segovia believe the statue is “repulsive and despicable” (Magazine, 2019) and even took to the web to create an online petition, arguing that the work is “offensive [to] Catholics, because [its depiction of the devil] constitutes the glorification of evil” (Magazine, 2019). The petition has since gained 5,600 signatures (Magazine, 2019). However, I can also see why the residents of Segovia would want to keep the statue. Natives of Segovia could never have predicted that by creating a statue of a devil based on a legend that they would face such controversy. To them, the devil did them a favor by creating an aqueduct which ultimately helped the city. Residents created a counter-petition to save the statue, which gained 2,850 signatures (Magazine, 2019).
HUM 100 Module Eight Short Answer: Belief System and Ethics 3 A judge temporarily stopped the project after many expressed concerns; however, his decision was eventually overturned after he reviewed the complaints, and he allowed the project to continue. One of the main values of humanities is providing the tools one needs for critical thinking. The humanities also encourages consideration of others and their beliefs. Today, humanities impact social issues by creating a connection between what one already knows and what one can learn. Humanities teaches a way of life to others who can then share what they learned with others for further education.
