Cultural Work Selected
The cultural work I have selected is the 9/11 Memorial. Located in lower Manhattan, the
memorial rests on approximately eight acres of where the former Twin Towers used to stand. The
9/11 memorial opened to the public on September 11, 2011, exactly ten years after the attack.
One of the elements that stood out to me about the memorial are the two memorial pools
located at the base of the former North and South towers and each pool contains the largest
manmade waterfall in North America (About the memorial). Along the edge of each pool, you
will find the names of each of the 2,983 people that lost their lives on September 11, 2001, as
well as those that lost their lives on February 26, 1993, when the World Trade Center was
bombed (About the memorial). The names of the victims being added to the memorial represent
those that were lost but will never be forgotten.
Another specific element that stood out to me is “The Survival Tree”. During the
recovery period of ground zero, workers found a single Callery pear tree that had been severely
damaged. Crews from the New York City Parks and Rec department removed the tree and
successfully nursed it back to health and place it back where it belonged—at the site of the
previous towers (About the memorial).

Purpose of the Culture Work Selected
The creators of the memorial were looking to create a space where people could go and
reflect on what took place on American soil while paying their respects to those that were lost.
They created a space where people could reflect on the day’s events, grieve, and try to heal.
Whether you visit the memorial in person or via the website, you cannot help but feel moved by
the creator’s work. In my option, the creators were successful in creating a place of remembrance
and peace in an area that once held the greatest tragedy on American soil.

Creative Expression
Creative expression impacts people and situations in different ways as they are a way for
us to express specific experiences. The events that occurred in 1993 and 2001 at the World Trade
Center impacted the entire nation. The 9/11 memorial also includes a museum which together
with the memorial provides education and artistic expression. One piece of art that can be found
in the memorial is a piece by artist Spencer Finch called “Trying to Remember the Color of the
Sky on That September Morning” (Trying to Remember). I can recall exactly what I was doing
on the morning of September 11
th
, before I even knew the nation was under attack. I was a junior
in high school and the first class of the day was gym which was held outside that day. I
remember looking up at the sky before class ended and saying “Wow. What a beautiful, perfect
day. There is not a single cloud in the sky”. When I look at the creative expression created by
Spencer Finch, it is a true representation of the sky on that September morning.

Relationship Between Culture and Expression
What happened on September 11, 2001?
What does the 9/11 memorial tell us about the culture in New York City and how they
moved forward after that tragic day?
Why is it important to understand the intent of the creators of the memorial and the
events that took place on September 11, 2001?
What symbols are used in the memorial? What do they signify?
How does the 9/11 memorial express the memory of the 9/11 attacks?
Values About the Culture Work Selected
How did the attack on the Twin Towers change my culture views?
How did the attack on the Twin Towers impact my life and the lives of others?
How have the expression of others changed my views of the 9/11 attacks?
Answer the Questions
To answer the questions asked, online research would need to be conducted. Using the
Shapiro library, I searched “9/11 grief and sorrow” among other 9/11 topics. There was an article
that I came across that discusses the “Vanishing Forms of 9/11: Twenty Years of Ruptures,
Ripples, and Reflections”. In the article, the author discusses the 9/11 memorial, stating “The
museum was designed to help us remember and grieve lives lost in, during, and after the terror
attacks of 1993 and 2001 at the former World Trade Center, in the Pentagon, and in Shanksville,
Pennsylvania. At the same time, it was meant to honor the site, considered by many to be sacred.
Continuing to bear witness to the devastation caused by the events intended to create suffering,
undermine beliefs, and break up communities reaffirms that we value the dignity of human life,

as well as an end to ignorance, hatred, and intolerance” (Pivnick, 2021). This specific paragraph,
in my option, describes perfectly why the 9/11 memorial was created and how people can use the
memorial to reflect on the events that took place.
Using the 9/11 Memorial website, I was able to view the memorial and museum. This
allowed me to reflect on the questions asked above and provided me with a deeper look into
things that had been unknown to me.
Using different search engines such as google and the Shapiro library, I searched using
keywords ground zero, 9/11 aftermath, how life was affected after the 9/11 attacks, etc.
Culture Shifts or Events: Study of Humanities
The creators of the 9/11 memorial responded to the terrorist attacks that took place in
1993 and 2001 on the World Trade Center. The memorial contains a lot of mixed emotions that
people have expressed over the last thirty years. Looking at the names of the victims of the
attacks, you cannot help but feel a sense of loss for the families who were directly impacted, but
you also feel a sense of loss for someone that lost their life too soon. The creators created a
meaningful space for everyone that visits, and this allows them to feel a connection with those
that lost their lives. The memorial is a symbol of healing and remembrance not only for the lives
that were lost, but also for the iconic towers that once stood 1,368 feet tall.
This course has helped me to understand the connection between events and creative
process. Module four of this course contained a reading that included “the context reveals what
was happening in the world and /in the life of the artist when the work of art was made”
(SNHU.EDU). This sentence not only pertains to the cultural work I selected, but it also pertains
to other pieces that were created throughout time.

Relationship Between Creative Expression and Culture: Culture Work Selected
When the 9/11 memorial was being created, the United States was trying to process what
happened on September 11, 2001, and heal from the events. On that beautiful September
morning, two planes flew into the Twin Towers. The first plane hitting the North tower at 8:45am
and the second hitting the South tower at 9:03am. Unfortunately, all passengers were killed
instantly as were those in the direct area of where the planes hit. While the world was focusing
on the Twin Towers, flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon killing all aboard instantly.
Approximately fifty-six minutes after the second plane crashed into the South tower, the tower
collapsed.
Almost half an hour later, the North tower collapsed. Pure panic and devastation take
over the entire nation. The creators of the 9/11 memorial took the events of these tragic events
and incorporated it into their work to remember the lives loss and the mass destruction that was
occurring on American soil.
Relationship Between Creative Expression and Culture: The Study of the Humanities
“After learning more about the context of a cultural work, you can look closely at the
work itself to find evidence of the intent” (SNHU.EDU). This sentence helped me to better
understand the impact that the 9/11 memorial has on society. By taking something so tragic and
turning it into a form of expression and remembrance, people from all over the world and of all
ages can better understand the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
Impact on Todays Issues: The Culture Work Selected
Created from past events, the 9/11 memorial can still be tied to lives today. Terrorism and
war are real events that take place every day. These events have lasting effects on those directly
and indirectly involved and impact on the lives of many. The 9/11 memorial allows us to connect

with the past while moving forward. While the Al Quada may be gone, the impact that they had
on the lives of Americans still lives on.
Impact on Todays Issues: The Study of the Humanities
Learning about the humanities and cultural works has provided me with the skills to look
at situations in a different way—a more detailed way. These new prospectives can guide me in
everyday situations and allow me to compare my values and beliefs to others.
