Standards: patterns of the
motion of the sun, moon,
and starts in the sky can
be observed, described,
and predicted
Seasonal Patterns of
sunrise and sunset can be
observed, described, and
predicted.
Standards: Express the
length of an object as a
whole number of length
units, by laying multiple
copies of a shorter object
(the
length unit) end to
end; understand that the
length measurement of an
object is the number of
same-size length units that
span it with no gaps or
overlaps.
Solar System
Write the
names of the
planets, and
how they
move. Write
and label the
moon phases.
Play space
themed
songs during
music time.
Color a
printout of the
solar system
and a piece of
construction
paper with the
phases of the
moon.
This
gives students
a visual on
size and
characteristics
of the planets.
Watch a video on the
solar system that
explains the planets
and the moons
phases.
How do the components
of our solar system
move and interact
with
one another?
Calculate the
difference between
the planet’s sizes.
This allows students
to practice problem
solving skills in
addition and
subtraction.
1.
How many planets
are in the solar
system?
2.
How does gravity
affect conditions?
3.
What are the moon
phases?
4.
What causes each
phase?
What does the solar
system consist of?
1.
What is the diameter of
each planet?
2.
What is the distance
from the sun for each
planet?
3.
What is the difference
of gravity on each
planet?
I chose the solar system since it is a topic, I always felt an interest in. There is a lot that
can be done with this theme as well as have it be integrated across multiple disciplines. It is a
topic that could be interesting to students as well. It has the potential to be fun for many students
as well. I picked first grade since that is one of the grades, I would prefer to teach one day. This
meets the criteria for a theme study based on the topic, grade level, and it can be taught in more
than one discipline. That topic being the solar system and that grade being first grade. There is an
activity in five different subjects. All teaching the same topic, but in a way suited for that topic.
This follows the interdisciplinary theory of teaching. Learning the same theme within multiple
disciplines. The teaching standards for those disciplines will be taught as well. Those standards
are very important to follow. The essential questions being asked have potential to spark a debate
and get those critical thinking skills going. They help generate more sub questions to keep the
study going.
This theme can help enrich a student’s learning experience.
I think the role of teacher as guide would be best to play in the development of this
theme. It is helpful for students to learn in more ways than just a lecture. It helps foster
confidence, and problem-solving skills. Being a guide will give students a chance for some
hands-on learning. This helps those who learn best hands on. It is beneficial to give opportunities
to guide those in the way they learn best. Give a chance to each type of learner. Being the guide,
I will have the materials and classroom all set up. Then I can guide the new lesson and intervene
when necessary. This will allow students to interact with the environment and learn from the
activities. It means this lesson plan will be carefully designed. This will also help provide
students with more one-on-one support. Giving those students who need a little more assistance
that chance to succeed as well.
