Week 3 Assignment “Historical Foundations of Existential-Humanistic Developmental Psychology”
Original Paragraph
In his study of representations of the third force in the history of psychology textbooks, Wertz (1992) found that roughly half of the texts sampled sounded the proverbial “death knell” for humanistic psychology (p. 473). Fortunately, this was not unanimous. Wertz found that evaluations of humanistic forms of psychology were more favorable when they were presented as an authentic recovery of a robust history implicating a heterogeneous group of thinkers beyond the stereotypical mention of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. Moreover, he concluded that humanistic psychologists were partly to blame for the frequent tendency toward deficient coverage.
Paraphrased Paragraph
Around half of the literature analyzed sounded the famed "death knell" for humanistic psychology, according to Wertz (1992), who examined representations of the third force in the history of psychology textbooks (p. 473). That's a good thing that wasn't a unanimous decision. Wertz discovered that opinions were more favorable when humanistic psychology procedures were presented as a sincere recovery of a rich past involving diverse thinkers beyond the mainstream. He also concluded that humanistic psychologists were responsible for the pervasive trend of subpar coverage.
