Assignment: Oral Stories – Virtues – Short Answer For this assignment you will refer to the videos we watched/listened to in class and answer the three short essay questions below. Be sure to answer with complete sentences, proper capitalization, punctuation, and support your statement with evidence from the story. Type your response inside the answer box, it will expand with your response, and do not forget to save your work before you submit this document in Canvas. Dorsman's Helpful Hints: Remember, the reading material and any supplemental information required to successfully complete this assignment, is located on the "Lesson: Oral Stories – Virtues" page. If you struggle with any of these questions, be sure to ask for clarification. 1. In the video, “The Story of Commitment,” we are introduced to a tragic love story. Write three paragraphs explaining the theme and lesson to be learned in this story. In the first paragraph, introduce the theme and the characters. In the second paragraph, provide evidence from the story to support your theme. In the final paragraph, present your opinion on the theme and if you feel this is a valuable lesson or not. If you choose to dig deeper into this question and write additional paragraphs that is fine, too. However, be sure to at least answer these three components. The story was about a young man and a young woman who fell in love, but tragically both of them died. I’m not really positive about what the theme is as there wasn’t a clear answer, it kind of just seemed like because the woman couldn’t marry the man, she got so in shock and carried away she sang herself to her death. This confuses me a lot because the woman doesn’t say much regarding her soon to be husbands death, she simply dances off into oblivion. The only theme I could really think of was to not let things ruin your spirit, the woman had a wonderful life ahead of her and she could’ve continued living if not for her actions following the death of her soon to be husband. one of the main reasons the theme is hard to find is because a lot of the symbolism is in the song, and the meaning behind the girl dying while singing the song. It explains to the viewer how she grieves in that moment and how she gets over her husbands death, through her own death. I’m mostly confused about the theme of the story because of the certain main points, like when Duane Hollow Horn Bear talks about the guy that is close friends with the other young man, it just seems like an odd detail to add in. Either way he expresses the love the couple had for each other and the length it will make someone go, I think that was a main important message in the story. 2. To complete this response you can choose between two stories: “Star Boy and the Seven Sisters,” or “Iktomi and the Handkerchiefs.” Within each of these stories there were several lessons that could be analyzed. Pick one of these lessons that spoke to you and explain- what was the lesson and why you chose it. There are several possibilities to answer this question, and no “one” perfect response. The only perfect
response is where you identify the lesson, provide support, and respond meeting the writing expectations. The story I chose was “star boy and the seven sisters” I have heard a variation of this story but with a different message, so with this one the message stuck out to me. I think some of the main things meant to teach when telling this story is that most things come full circle, and there are many new beginnings hidden in the ending of things. I think these are very important, heartfelt lessons that should be taught to everyone. The way that the story is told from the beginning to end just really brings in the mood and drew me in as I wanted to know what came of this woman who married a star man and what happens to her starchild. I think this story is a good way of teaching about choices and action, consequence, as well as lessons about letting go and honoring your people. 3. In the final story, “The Importance of Stories,” Duane Hollow Horn Bear gives his take on life, life lessons, and the importance of stories. For this response, share your thoughts on the importance of stories. Do you agree or disagree on their importance? Your response should clearly state your opinion and provide support for your opinion. A great response would draw support from this story, or any of the stories we have covered up to this point (be sure to identify the story you reference) and include a personal reflective connection. This response is an opinion-based response, and I cannot grade your opinion, so ensure you cover all aspects of the multi-layered question. Ask for assistance if needed. These stories are very important. They keep the main ideas of the Lakota people going, and really teach importance of things like honor, love, respect, family, using logic, and many other lessons. I like how a handful of the stories are short but long enough to tell a climactic story and get many points across to the listener. I think it is also very important to know the ideas and beliefs of your ancestors, and to take time to try to learn and understand the ways of your ancestors. This is taught in Lakotas short stories and it stresses the beliefs of their peoples.
