In this assignment this week I was asked to discuss three different questions. One was how is benchmarking used in healthcare for performance improvement. The second one is identify what the HIM director did to implement the best practices in benchmarking. Lasty I will be evaluating the HIM director’s decision to send the transcript home, was it appropriate. In the essay each paragraph will discuss each individual question. Benchmarking is used in health care for many different reasons and used different ways as well. It allows hospitals or practices and even individual clinicians to monitor their own performance and even compare them to others. “Benchmarking is used in healthcare for performance improvement by measuring and comparing services. Benchmarking is a tool that was created to sustain high standards. By identifying disparities in knowledge, this tool allows industries to enhance performance and create better standards.” (Watking, n.d.) This is huge especially within health care to make sure you are not only meeting the standards but trying to achieve more than just that. In the example you gave me the HIM was using benchmarking to compare transcription practices. This is a major thing to compare because this could make or break how a patient feels about their care. Communication is big and crucial to healthcare.

The HIM director did a lot to implement the best practice in benchmarking for this. First, she investigated how to even improve the process, by looking into the literature of the transcription practices. Then she did her research into looking what other facilities or practices used around them even attended a conference to see what everyone was using. After all that she compared many different companies as her and asked what they do and how they like it. She then finds the best company and present all the information to her team. Lasty the final question was the HIM decision to send the transcriptionist home was it appropriate? I think teleworking is a very sore subject especially to the older generation who don’t really understand that you can get as much work done at home at work as well. I think the transcriptionist deserves to work from home and was the right decision as long as the amount of productivity continues to increase I don’t see any issues.
