1 H.B. Charles, Jr. “The Supremacy of Christ” (Colossians 1:15-20) Summary In this expository and profound sermon, H. B. Charles, Jr. explains in awesome detail the supremacy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pastor Charles spoke about the erroneous error that was in the church at the time that Paul penned this letter to the people at Colossae. The main idea of his sermon is that Jesus Christ is exactly who He says He is, the Son of God and the express image of the person of God the Father. Pastor Charles explained that Jesus Christ is Supreme of all of creation, be it in heaven or on the earth. He referred to Colossians 1:15 which says that Jesus is “the image of the invisible God”, meaning that Jesus is God incarnate and is the essential nature of God. Charles explained that when the disciples asked Jesus to “show” them the Father, Jesus explained to them that they were looking at the Father when they beheld Him. In his sermon, the preacher also stated that Jesus mirrors God the Father not only essentially, but morally as well. Jesus has the Father’s character, and He represents all that the Father stands for in word, deed and action. Jesus, per the preacher, reveals the invisible God perfectly and completely. Pastor Charles went on to say that Jesus Christ is the Creator of the world. According to Colossians 1:16, all things were created through Jesus and for Him. Charles explained that Jesus is the source of all creation. One of the most poignant statements that I appreciated was when the preacher said that “every created thing bears the stamp: “Made by Jesus.” This includes everything in the spirit world as well as the physical world. Pastor Charles also explained that Jesus is the main “agent of creation.” One of the texts the pastor referred to was John 1:3 where it says, “all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was
2 made.” This takes me back to the book of Genesis during the Creation Week, when every time God was about to create, He said “Let us make.” This cements the fact that the Trinity (or the Godhead in terms of how my church explains it) were all involved in the creation of the world. Jesus was there, and it was through Him that the created things were spoken into existence. One of the main statements in this text in Colossians, which was brought out by Pastor Charles, is the fact that Jesus is the sustainer of the world, meaning He holds it all in place. No matter if there is chaos in the world, natural disasters, changing of seasons, or general peace and tranquility, Jesus holds it all together. I liked when the preacher said that Jesus consistently holds things together, whether we acknowledge it or not. Pastor Charles talked about his junior high school experience and how he first encountered a challenge of atheistic evolution from the teacher. He stated that he should have spoken up and refuted the baseless claims of the teacher, but at that time he did not have the courage to back up the fellow student who did and was not able to fully defend her position. Pastor Charles also spoke of the fact that Jesus Christ is supreme over the church, as He is the head of the church as explained in Colossians 1:18. As head of the church, Jesus is described as the “bridegroom” and the church as the “bride” according to Revelation. But the preacher explains that the more accurate term for the church is the “body of Christ.” This, according to the sermonic discourse, shows that the church is a living, breathing organism that should be centered around Christ and His mission, which is to “seek and to save.” Lastly, Pastor Charles elaborated on Christ’s incarnation which made possible the redemption that could only be made possible by Him and His atoning sacrifice.
3 Analysis One of the strengths of Pastor Charles’ sermon on the Supremacy of Christ is the biblical backing of all his assertions. Pastor Charles provided scripture for each of his main statements regarding the Jesus as creator, His supremacy over all creation and the church His sustainment of the world, and the effects of His atoning sacrifice on the cross of Cavalry. Pastor Charles distinctively made it clear that no one else was qualified to call themselves God and certainly die on behalf of fallen man. Another strength in Pastor Charles’ sermonic discourse is that he leaves no room for misinterpretation of what he was saying as he was led by the Holy Spirit. The preacher referred to the main texts of her sermon as found in Colossians 1:15-20, but he provided several other texts and illustrations to strengthen his statements. Pastor Charles mentioned the Battle of Blue Licks and how the two sides at war continued to fight because of the news traveling slowly that the American Revolution has ended. He used this example to explain that because Christ had reconciled all things to himself by way of the cross, our sins are now atoned for and we do not have to go on willfully sinning anymore. Lessons Gleaned from the Sermon One lesson I gleaned from Pastor Charles’ sermon is that we do not have to vindicate the word of God. The word of God has the power to vindicate itself. What I noticed from Pastor Charles is that he let the Bible tell the story of his messaged as preached from Colossians 1:15- 20. You can tell that he spent time studying not only his passage of focus but all the surrounding texts and other books as they correlated to the sermonic text of focus. I will most certainly incorporate this style in my own personal sermon preparation.

4 Another lesson I learned from this sermon is that relatable stories can further strengthen the main topic of your sermon while also providing a point of relevance to the issues at hand. As the preacher explained that the Apostle Paul was addressing error in the church, he provided a story regarding an atheistic teacher and hoe a student stood up but was quickly shot down regarding her beliefs. While this story was not exactly a “success story”, it does remind us that we should always stand firm in God’s word and be able to give an account to any man of the reason of the hope that we have as Christians.
