The project I selected was the song “Respect”. The song is a sassy track
from
Aretha
Franklin
that captured the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Aretha was 24-
year-old when she released her rendition of “Respect” in April 1967. The Grammy award-
winning song has passed down through generations, crossed cultural divides and volleyed
through musical genres

Aretha Franklin - Respect
In 500 years, I think the impact of this cultural work would that the song will continue to
resonate with people whether you are a male, female, or any race, because everyone will always
be able to relate to wanting some respect and the song helps people express that feeling.
The
impact the song has today is that it is still considered one of the most influential recordings in
pop music history. It
gave an anthem to the civil rights movement. Eventually the song served as
a call to arms for women worldwide and a chance to right wrongs and level the playing field.
The song originally was recorded by Otis Redding and referenced a husband working all day and
wanting to come home to dinner and respect from his wife. When Aretha Franklin recorded her
version of the song, she added a bridge and an infectious call-and-response and completely
transformed the meaning of the song.

The value of this cultural
work in the culture today is “more than 50 years later, Franklin's "Respect" is as relevant as ever.
It's been played in nearly 30 feature films, everything from
Mystic Pizza
and
Forrest
Gump
to
Desperately Seeking Susan
and
Bridget Jones's Diary.”
