6-1 Short Answer: Human Culture
A creator from the twentieth century that I am choosing to write about is Michael Jackson
AKA King of Pop. Michael was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, and passed away on
June 25, 2009. Michael Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. Michael sang
from a very young age with 4 of his siblings; they called themselves the Jackson 5. The Jackson
5 was first signed in 1969 with Motown Records. They immediately made multiple number-one
pop hits with their music. As Michael Jackson matured, his voice changed, and this worried his
family, but Michael went solo in 1979 and had the best-selling album of that year. Michael went
on to make many more number-one hits and taught the world many new dance moves, including
but not limited to the “Moonwalk”.
A cultural work that Michael Jackson created is the dance move called the “Moonwalk”.
Michael would do the Moonwalk while performing his songs and his audience went crazy over it
every time. People all over the world, still to this day, do the Moonwalk. The Moonwalk and
Michael's music bring families and events together; it did 60 years ago and still does to this day.
Questions this work prompts are:
How did Michael Jackson influence dance culture?
How did the Moonwalk influence society 30, 40, and 50 years ago?
How did Michael Jackson contribute to society outside of his music?
One big question I would ask about human culture is, how did Michael Jackson become
the King of Pop out of the 5 siblings in the Jackson 5? This connects with the larger human need
to express themselves because people always want more information about famous artists. What
made Michael Jackson different from his siblings? Did he have the most drive out of the 5
3
brothers in Jackson 5? Was the decision a family decision or a preference? Did the other 4
siblings not have the influence, ability, or passion that Michael Jackson had? There are so many
questions I would have and I’m sure the rest of the world also!
