Hello Class, Tests like state, standardized, or high-stakes face different issues whether it be from students, educators, or the community. These tests are used when making a huge decision about a student whether it be them being promoted to the next grade or even graduating from high school. Regardless of how well the student did throughout the year, the high stakes tests have the ability to veto that and be based on whether or not the student passes the test. These tests have been shown to cause major issues within the education system due to the problems that accompany them such as grade retention, the tests being unfair, teaching to the test, etc. With tests being high stakes and if students fail, they are being retained in the same grade having to repeat it. This has been proven to be counterproductive with students not improving academically, but rather negatively affecting their emotional state with having to stay behind leaving friends and them feeling not good enough. Another issue with these tests is that some students do not test well and suffer from test anxiety which prohibits them from excelling on the test. The results of this will be low scores which can impact funding, the students future, etc. High-stakes testing often leads educators to teach for the test. Often what happens is only what is going to be tested is taught so subjects like science, history, or art are overlooked. These tests usually are multiple choice so experiments, research papers, or other assessments that test critical thinking skills are not used which do not truly assess the students comprehension. As time has gone on, there has been some reform when it comes to standardized testing because there are more cons than there are pros. Amrein, A. L., & Berliner, D. C. (2002).
