Art Appreciation The Weeping Woman Pablo Picasso’s Weeping Woman was completed in 1957. Picasso was a painter form the 20 th century. He was responsible for introducing Cubism, via his painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in 1907. Picasso experimented with multiple art styles before becoming involved with the surrealist movement and continued painting until his death. Picasso used painting as the medium in The Weeping Woman ; I chose to critique The Weeping Woman because of the choice of colors and how those colors represent the inexpressible and omnipresent suffering that exist. This painting can be viewed as an expressionism piece because of how seemingly distorted reality is. There is certainly not a real foundation scene in the composition. The background is finished with various lines and tones. The woman is the center of the painting. She is wearing a frill on top of her head which indicates her discernment. My initial feeling of the painting is that the women's face isn’t symmetrical, but rather presented in an abstract shape and consists entirely of lines. The fundamental shadings that are utilized in this painting are green, yellow, blue, purple, red and black. The Weeping Woman is a testament to suffering and sorrow. The colors used by Picasso can be viewed as unique as each color represents a different emotion. The light purple at the base of the woman's eyes can communicate misery. The other portion of the face that is consumed by various shades of green and yellow; these can be said to decipher other strong feelings that Picasso may have had towards the woman in the painting, as she was an imperative person in Picasso's life. The Weeping Woman is made with mostly lines which can imply that the lady had solid features. As stated before, the painting consists of only
lines, however, the only curves that exist in the painting are used to represent the woman's hair and eyes. The woman's eyes are depicted in a burdensome way to allow the viewer to acknowledge that the woman is crying, which ties into the theme of sadness. Picasso wanted the viewer to feel torment and give an explanation that clarifies how all ladies feel and the desolation that they are reliably in. The viewer can see that the woman has cried to the point where her tears have started to peel her skin, revealing her bones. The woman is attempting to put her handkerchief in her mouth; however, the handkerchief is a shard of glass, which results in the woman experiencing more pain and agony. Picasso wanted the viewer to understand the agony that the woman was feeling. It's also important to note that during this time, women weren't respected, so it wasn't exactly the easiest to be a woman in this era. Picasso exhibits the appreciation that he has for her through this painting as he wants the viewer to appreciate the woman just as he does. Picasso's purpose for the Weeping Woman, as referenced before. This is because of the colors and shapes Picasso used in The Weeping Woman; the components as well as the pictures depicted within the Weeping Woman. The purpose of the painting is to formulate a relationship with the female sex. Women are more likely to understand the emotions portrayed in the painting. It can be hypothesized that women are capable comprehend and appreciate the message behind The Weeping Woman. I accept that this is a key message within the painting. The frail worth lies in the various colors Picasso used. I thought that it required abstract thinking to decipher different spaces of the face as the colors that were utilized didn't appear to coordinate with different areas of the face.
