I picked Charles Ives’ “Variations On America” to discuss in today's Arts Joy Assignment. The variants throughout Ives’ “Variations On America'' were pretty easy for me to hear without looking at the tracks. Often there would be notes which would clash with each other, and you could make out the newly formed variant because it would start off in a lower register than the previous melody/variant which had been present. This made for some very interesting combinations, as well as some clashing sections. I’m not sure what the exact names are of the two different “variations” present towards the last third of “Variations On America,” but I know that I absolutely loved the way that both clashed and resolved into each other. The layering of the clashing notes and different registers made for a great listen. The way that listening to an instrumental orchestration of all these American classics allows you to hear them so differently is incredible. I thought that the way Ives’ arranged and wrote this piece makes it possible to hear the different variations more thoroughly, and allowed me to hear the depth and grandeur which I feel many of these tunes lose when the melody is solely contributed by a vocalist. I was originally listening to the classic vocal melodies which the many original tunes that were made variations in this tune are known for. But, after listening for about the 3rd time, I found myself discovering new underlying “melodies” and many dark bass undertones. I learned the level of appreciation which analyzing a track can contribute can be very rewarding, and honestly quite enjoyable.
