EXAMPLES OF GOOD DESIGN - SPACE Assignment: Locate one 2-D artwork that you think strongly utilizes this speci±c element of design. The artwork example you provide maybe ±ne art, illustration, or graphic design. Preferably you ±nd an example that you see in person, however you may also look through an art history books, art journals/magazine, or artist website. Provide a photograph/copy of the artwork by either taking a picture and printing it OR you may copy it out of a book, magazine, or o² the internet. Fill-in the information below and attach or insert the photograph to the bottom of the page. Artwork #1 Artist: Vincent Van Gogh Title: The Starry Night Date: 1889 Medium: Oil on Canvas Source & Location: Online, Held at Museum of Modern Art, New York Brie±y example why you have selected the artwork as a good example of the speci²c design element. Use text vocabulary. I chose the piece The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh because it has a strong use of Space. Within this piece Van Gogh uses both positive and negative space. Both the village and the hills are a representation of negative space; while the stars and the moon compose the positive space. I think without the strong attribute that positive and negative space are to this particular piece, it would not give o² nearly the same impression. When doing more research on this piece, there was a lot of talk about the cypress bush. Some say that the use of this was to represent his mental state; that the swirl of the brush strokes depict his depression. Van Gogh also stated that he likes to paint cypresses because “he felt that this tree re³ected some of his emotions.” By using the cypress bush as a form of negative space, it also shows the importance of it. It’s placed on the left foreground part of the painting, which draws the viewer's eyes in to really try and distinguish its true meaning.
