HUM 100 Project 1 Artifact Chart Although you will work on various assignments throughout the course to support you in completing this assignment, this project is not due until Week 6. Artifact What is your chosen artifact ? Include a link to or a picture of the artifact. I. Describe the artifact in detail. For instance, how would you describe it to someone who could not see it? Silver Linings Playbook is a 2012 American drama written and directed by David O. Russell. The move was adapted from a novel written by Matthew Quick in 2008. The movie, Silver Linings Playbook , begins with main character, Pat, being signed out of an inpatient psychiatric facility by his mother. Pat was court ordered to undergo treatment after assaulting a man he had caught his wife cheating with. He’s introduced to his friend’s sister-in-law, Tiffany, who also struggles with loss and mental illness. Initially, Pat agrees to enter a dance competition with Tiffany in exchange for Tiffany delivering a letter to Pat’s estranged wife who has a restraining order against him. As the two get to know each other, they fall in love. II. Choose elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you experience it and explain why. For instance, what particularly catches your senses or makes you want to keep experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience? This is a current movie being released just seven years ago. One experiences this by watching and listening. The soundtrack and setting is current and relatable.
Assumptions about your artifact III. State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the creator is trying to express, and is that message successfully expressed? I believe the purpose was to create a financially successful romantic drama about the unique social problems faced by people with mental illness. IV. Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artifact and its culture interrelate? For instance, how would a particular form of body modification reflect the urban culture in which you encountered it? This movie reflects current American family culture very well. Looking at the characters and setting it is very familiar and relatable. The family gets together every Sunday to watch football. Family members and friends express concern for each other in sometimes demeaning or overbearing ways. V. Use the artifact to discuss how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by the people and situations that surround it. How might the artifact and the person who created it have impacted each other? For instance, how might the geographic location where the artifact was made, the materials used to create the artifact, the medium of the creative process, or the environment where the artifact is displayed influence the creator’s life or future creative work? How might the artifact and the culture or context in which it was created have impacted each other? For instance, does the artifact add to the understanding of the culture from which it was created? What contributions does it make to continuing on a dialogue about that culture and the importance of its artifacts? This movie has very recognizable actors playing in it like Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper and Julia Stiles. The popularity of these actors and the love of football in this country are factors in the popularity of the movie. Relatable themes like football and Sunday family time make it easy to understand that people with a mental illness come from regular families like most of us do.
VI. Questions: Pose questions you have after thinking deeply about this artifact. What more do you want to know regarding: A. The relationship between human culture and expression B. Question 1: I would like to know why the creator chose to make a movie about a mentally ill character with a dysfunctional, but loving family. I wonder if he has this issue in his family. Question 2: Did the creator’s own assumptions about mental illness shape his portrayal of the characters. C. Your personal assumptions about artifacts of this sort and why they exist D. Question 1: Movies exist as entertainment. Question 2: I believe movies like this are made to make you feel good when you’re done watching them. C. How your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others Question 1: Sharing experiences and interpretations of artifacts can make us more empathetic and understanding of each other. Question 2: In this specific movie, almost every character displays some form of illness or dysfunction. It does this in a way that looks very normal. For example, the father is a gambler, the best friend has anxiety and feels pressured to succeed for his family. The best friend has a controlling wife who also appears manipulative at times. While watching, I made a mental note of each character’s dysfunctional traits. Even though I thought I was sensitive to issues like this before, I realized how much of this behavior I witness among my own friends and family. I had not recognized it as dysfunctional before watching this movie. E. The relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its meaning
