Introduction
This module provides students with the opportunity to externalise their practice by executing and
synthesising responses to a range of professional, live, competition and self-initiated briefs.
Students will undertake projects that are relevant to their professional goals and will address issues including scheduling, turnaround times, verbal and visual presentation, budgeting and meeting the expectations of clients and contractees. Emphasis will be on ideas generation, encouraging students to formulate solutions, professionally, articulately and within strict deadlines. Having produced a range of solutions students will then be required to realise their concept and produce a highly refined finished artefact for professional consideration, competition entry and / or inclusion in their portfolio or Degree Show exhibition. Assignment You are required to complete ALL 3 projects
for this module and submit the completed outputs along with your research and development work in a digital/ PDF portfolio for assessment
at the end of the Module. As this is an assessible document and you must take care preparing it in order to evidence your work against the Learning/Assessment outcomes of the module. We strongly advise you to not leave this to the last weeks of the module. Please read this module guide carefully and familiarise yourself with the Learning/Assessment outcomes of the module.
Project 1 – Three Little Words (weeks 1 - 3)

Attempt at originality in your work. Your Tutorials/Seminars each week will focus on these aspects. Project 2 – Build it Better. (weeks 4 – 7)
What you need to do We would like you to take an existing piece of work. eg. A campaign, a film poster, a piece of design, an amination scene, a new set of characters, record sleeves etc. Consider, how might you
make this newly relevant to a contemporary audience? How might you innovate or create an original solution? What can you bring to this work that will make it stand out and capture people’s
attentions and imagination? You need to write your brief on the template supplied before you begin developing your response and work for this project.
By now you should be formulating the area of practice you wish to pursue after graduation and as
such the project must enable you to: demonstrate a
high level of skill and understanding of your chosen area of practice;
high level of imaginative thinking;
development of your own personal approach and visual language
.
Projects need to demonstrate originality, innovation and risk where appropriate, but must also be achievable with the resources you have. You should consider the balance between extending your
skill set and experimenting with new techniques and processes, and the deliverable elements of the projects work. Ultimately, good planning of the project should be in place before you embark. The project brief must facilitate the creation of a significant amount of work and finished outcomes
, that are relevant to, and communicate effectively to, a chosen audience
. This must be clearly articulated in the project brief template attached.
The size and scope of your proposed project will be checked by your tutor, and you cannot begin work on your project until this has been formally signed off. Projects should demonstrate a growing independence and confidence and be directed towards achieving your professional goals
. Importantly, projects should consider, ‘how’ you wish to be viewed by industry professionals and ‘how’ you will stand out in a crowded and changeable workplace. Project 3 – Competition Brief (weeks 8-12)
Silent Manga Competition

th
of December which is the Monday before your final Module submission. If there is anything that you do not understand about this assignment brief once you

Further Guidance Notes on Assessment Criteria
1.
Identify and apply effective research methodologies locating their practice within a professional and critical discourse;
What does this mean? (Evidence and explanation: your work and portfolio submission should demonstrate
that you understand the discipline area that you are working within and the associated practices and standards of work necessary to work at a professional level. You work must demonstrate a high level of research, both understanding the subject but also the professional context. Eg. Other artists, designers, audience, professional organisations, locations. Your work should be ambitious and push next areas of potential within your discipline area).
2. Demonstrate conceptual development of a wide range of ideas showing evidence of imaginative thinking, creative flexibility and the development of a personal visual language;
What does this mean? (Evidence and explanation: You must provide us with lots of ideas. These should not
be constrained by limiting factors, but should be ambitious. These ideas need to be properly researched and explored and there should be lots of drawing and visualizations exploring this. Your own style, process, area of practice and approach should begin to emerge here, with a growing confidence in what you are pursuing being in evidence).
3. Identify the key issues involved in creating creative artefacts which effectively communicate ideas to specific audiences;
What does this mean? (Evidence and explanation: All creative work needs to have a place to exist, a need and an audience. You must consider this and have researched the audience thoroughly. Once you have established a detailed understanding of the audience you need to measure how your ideas will most effectively communicate your message). 4. Present and evaluate their work accurately and in a professional manner;
What does this mean? (Evidence and explanation: The presentation of your work must be professional and
well considered. Images should be presented at an appropriate resolution and all headings, type and layout must be designed. You must only put forward your best work, and this selection process will demonstrate your ability to evaluate your work).
5. Demonstrate growing independence, self reliance and confidence in productively directing their practice.
What does this mean? (Evidence and explanation: Your projects and time should be well managed throughout the module. This should be evident in the amount of work you have completed and how you organise your time for maximum benefit of your project work). What You Need to Deliver
In order to complete the assignment you must complete ALL projects
listed in the Assignment Description section and submit your finished visual outcomes along with all research and development work collated in a PDF portfolio. If you are unclear how to do this, please speak to the module leader. Submission Requirements
The submission of final work should take the form of a Single
digital PDF document submitted via the Assessment LINK. Other files, such as video files, can be submitted separately alongside this PDF document, up to a maximum of 5 files.
Consider this document when putting it together. It should work as a short ‘client’
style presentation of the
finished work, development process and any significant technical developments or research that played a big part in this project work. The PDF should be designed, using headings and captions where appropriate. Make sure the image size
and quality of your work is clear to view.
Your portfolio submission must demonstrate ongoing engagement and professionalism
across the duration of the module.

Extensions and Mitigating Circumstances
We want you to do your best in each assessment. However, we know that sometimes events happen that are either beyond your control or not easy to predict and which mean that you will not be able to submit your coursework by the deadline. If this happens, you can apply for an extension to your deadline according to our regulations. If you need longer than the extension window, you can apply for a deferral, which takes you to the next assessment period. You must apply for an extension or a deferral before
the assignment deadline stated on SONIC. Apply for an extension or deferral by visiting this page
on the student portal.

need to do to pass the module. If you have a Deferral you should also consult the Aula space for the relevant Assignment Brief. Again, speak to your tutor to discuss the details of this assignment. Academic Misconduct We expect all students to act with academic integrity, which means that they will study and produce work in an open, honest and responsible manner.
Academic misconduct covers any action by a student to gain unfair advantage (e.g. extra marks) for her/himself, or for another student, in their assessed work. It not only damages your personal reputation, but also the reputation of the entire university, and it will not be tolerated at Coventry University. There are severe penalties for students who are found guilty of academic misconduct ranging from obtaining a mark of 0% for the piece of work concerned, through to exclusion from the University.
Many modules require you to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the work of others (artists, makers, practitioners, academics, designers, performers, etc.). It is vital that you make it absolutely clear when you are using work from other sources, and that you reference it clearly and correctly. If you are unsure how to reference, please refer to the library for support with APA
and speak to a tutor on the module immediately.
Library Referencing Support Information https://libguides.coventry.ac.uk/apa
Support for correct referencing can also be found though the Centre for Academic Writing (CAW)
