Jessica Allen Southern New Hampshire University Ant-101 November 12, 2023 3-2 Journal Food Production The production of food has continued to evolve over time for millions of years. Anthropologists study food behaviors and the substances that humans have used over time and how they changed. Forging was the first mode which was used by hunters and gatherers to search for edible foods. This caused human lives to be mobile as they needed to travel to where food was. This evolved into a horror culture which is a small-scale agriculture. This consisted of small fields and gardens which provided food for individual households. Platonism is the process to domesticate animal herds these consisted of goats ,horses, cattle, and many other animals. From here animal husbandry was born instead of just killing animals for food humans were able to get more out of domesticated animals. Animals were used to help lighten the load of farming by carrying crops and tools and working the fields. Other resources that came from these animals would be things such as milk, fur, and wool. As humans started living in larger communities the need for food increased, this is where industrial agriculture and intensive agriculture methods formed. Intensive agriculture used new technologies and processes these included large labor forces gene modification and soil preparation to help increase the amount of food they were able to grow in each crop.( Welsch, Vivanco, & Fuentes,2019)
As food production methods improved it continued to affect society as a whole most notably would be the population size continued to increase over time. Food has always been integrated with cultures. An example of this would be how of Papua New Guinea believes that eating food connected you directly to the individual that prepared it and that the food had “mystical dynamism, vitality, and danger” ( Welsch, Vivanco, & Fuentes,2019). As the production of food became more industrialized, most cultures, the process of obtaining food has become disconnected an impersonal. In societies where the majority of people are purchasing food from large supermarkets often fail to understand the importance of food and the connection to the natural environment where it is produced, and the people involved in the process. Food production has had a large impact on not only my life but society as well. Many companies produce ultra(chemically) processed food to save costs and have a higher profit margin. When food is over processed, it can lead to many health issues such as obesity, digestive disorders, hormone irregularities, and increase the risk of cancer. Due to the danger that these products can cause. We are a dye free household due to the potential impacts on behavior in children. The use of dye in food is used since it costs less than using natural products such as beets and turmeric. It also makes food a much brighter color to appeal to children . Until we became a dye free household, I was aware of the number of items that contained these potentially harmful ingredients. This results in us purchasing many organic food products. “Healthy” foods come at a much higher cost and one of the main reasons that people purchase these ultra processed foods.
