Maya1 Annotated Bibliography Berkowitz, Peter. "Real Power to the People: Only a liberal democracy can protect individuals and restrain rulers, and liberal democracy demands liberal education." Hoover Digest, no. 1, winter 2021, pp. 53+. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints , link.gale.com/apps/doc/A651792020/OVIC?u=lincclin_tcc&sid=bookmark- OVIC&xid=8c2dd10e. Accessed 27 Oct. 2023. In this essay, Berkowitz goes into detail about how Marxist communism failed, and liberal democracy was able to thrive and grow. The author highlights the current misconceptions of both ideals, due to the shift in educational focus. He explains how higher education is backing away from teaching a neutral perspective on individual freedoms and free markets and moving forward with teachings on socialism and negativity towards political and economic freedom. He concludes by suggesting a re-implementation of liberal education that embraces critical thinking and diversity in thoughts. This article meets the minimum currency requirements standards because it was published less than five years ago when the topic of liberal education was coming into discussion. It is relevant to the argument because it explains how liberal democracy protects individual freedoms, compared to communist Marxist ideas. Authority can be granted due to Peter Berkowitz being an accredited scholar specializing in political science and his extensive work on protecting constitutional rights and democracy. The article includes evidence and concrete information making it fairly accurate. Finally, the purpose of the article is to explain a problem and provide a solution to it, which he does successfully. This source contains important information on how communism, an authoritarian form of government, managed to fail as liberal democracy (a common form of democracy) was able to thrive instead. The argument on how liberal democracy protects individuals and stops authoritarian power will be used to highlight how democracy protects individuals and their rights. Maya, 1
Maya2 Lowe, David. "Democracy and Freedom Are Spreading Worldwide." Democracy, edited by Mike Wilson, Greenhaven Press, 2006. Opposing Viewpoints. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/EJ3010445206/OVIC? u=lincclin_tcc&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=5da7ed1a. Accessed 29 Oct. 2023. Originally published as "Expanding Democracy Around the World: Prospects and Challenges," National Endowment for Democracy, 2003. In this article, David Lowe discusses his viewpoint on the recent (from the mid-170s to the present time) global spread of democracy. He starts by defining democracy and later shifts to argue how it protects human rights and improves citizens’ economics. Lowe describes how the growth of democracy became a wave that impacted several countries, where most became democratic states. The article concludes by highlighting the significance of maintaining and expanding democracy to better protect human rights and foster economic growth. The article barely meets currency standards as it was published twenty years ago when democracy in the middle east was being heavily debated. It is, however, relevant to the argument because it highlights how democracy has helped protect human rights and create prosperous nations. Authority can be granted as David Lowe was vice president of Government and External Relations for the National Endowment for Democracy. The article contains relevant evidence that helps back up the point being discussed, making it accurate. Finally, the purpose of this article is to inform the audience on the growth of democracy. This source contains important information on how democracy protects human rights and improves the economy. Ideas and evidence from this article will be used to support my claim that democracy protects human rights. Maya, 2
