The Indian Act policy has significantly impacted Indigenous Peoples and their communities in negative ways. In my opinion, the most significant way being is losing their self-identity or cultural identity due to the implementation of the Indian Act by the Government. This act was originally created in hopes to put an end to the: " cultural, social, economic, and political distinctiveness of Aboriginal peoples by absorbing them into mainstream Canadian life and values" (Hanson 2009). Because of this, I infer it may have caused for young adolescents to go through an identity crisis when the Government of Canada is trying to tell you that you are not allowed to practice your cultural activities. These policies also cause for a lack of access to essential necessities such as clean water, healthcare, and electricity. Another challenge Indigenous People may face due to the policies is the loss of language. The policies in the past have forbid them to speak their cultural languages and because of that they may have forgotten how to speak it and were unable to pass this language down. 2.) What is your understanding of the legacies of these policies in the everyday lives of Indigenous People?
My understanding of the legacies of these policies in the everyday lives of Indigenous People is that it was made by the Government to force Indigenous Peoples into living a mainstream life. Due to the actions the Indian Act has forced onto them which restricted their freedom, it has caused them to live with difficulties and hardships. A significant thing that Indigenous People may live with is generational/intergenerational trauma which affects their mental, emotional, and social well-being. Although, despite having gone through all this, Indigenous Peoples continue to stay strong and resilient to fight for their culture. A question I have regarding Canadian state policies and Indigenous education is: Which policy impacted Indigenous Peoples the most historically and how did the Indigenous education lead respond to it through an educational context? less
