ANTH 145 Homework 3: Reproductive Tradeoffs 1) In one or two sentences, describe the relationship between fertility and child mortality rates. As time progresses, both fertility and child mortality rates decrease, which creates a positive correlation between the two. 2) How could declining fertility limit child mortality? Decreasing fertility would limit child mortality because if less children are being born, less deaths are able to occur. 3) What about increasing child survival could limit fertility? Increasing child survival could be an indicator of increased investment in individual children, which would limit fertility because of the tradeoff of quality vs quantity. 4) What is the main difference between the trend you just saw (child mortality and income) and the trend you looked at in the previous questions (child mortality and fertility)? The main difference is that child mortality and income are negatively correlated, with child mortality decreasing as income increases. 5) What do you think might cause this difference in how child mortality responds to income vs. fertility? Fertility creates a limiting factor for child mortality, but higher income directly leads to lower mortalities due to people having greater access to resources that increase child survivorship. 6) Which of these four countries experienced the largest absolute decline in child mortality from beginning until end of the periods shown in this table? Bangladesh experienced the largest absolute decline in mortality. 7) Which experienced the largest relative decline in child mortality? The United Kingdom experienced the largest relative decline in child mortality. 8) Which experienced the largest absolute decline in fertility? Bangladesh experienced the largest absolute decline in fertility. 9) Which experienced the largest relative decline in fertility? China experienced the largest relative decline in fertility. For each of the following pairs, which would you expect to favor higher Ideal Family Size (IFS)?
[0.25 pts ea] For each pair, also explain why you think this might be the case? [0.25 pts ea] 10) Hunter-gatherers vs. agriculturalists?[0.5 pts] Agriculturalists because there would be more hands to work in agriculture to support the family and children are able to work young. 11) High-mortality vs. low mortality populations?[0.5 pts] High-mortality, because more children increases the chances of surviving offspring. 12) Factory workers vs. family farm? [0.5 pts] Family farm, because children can work as laborers to support the family. 13) Free education vs. expensive tuition? [0.5 pts] Free education, less investment is needed to support the child’s education. 14) Monogamous vs. polygynous husbands? [0.5 pts] Polygynous, assuming traditional gender roles, as more children is a strategy to strengthen lineage. 15) Young, unmarried people vs. older, married people? [0.5 pts] Older married people, assuming that they are more stable financially as well as having a stable relationship of which both parties are able to make proper contributions to caring for children. Which of the following populations would you expect to have higher fertility, all else equal (Answer A or B)? 16) (A) Average age at weaning at age 2 vs. (B) weaning at age 4? [0.5 pts] A, more time investment in infant prevents reproduction 17) (A) Child mortality rate of 50/100,000 vs. (B) child mortality rate of 125/100,000? [0.5 pts] B, higher mortality is associated with higher fertility 18) (A) Average household income of $100,000/year vs. (B) $25,000/year? [0.5 pts] B, higher income is associated with lower fertility 19) (A) large payoff to education vs. (B) small payoff to education? [0.5 pts] B, limiting fertility magnifies payoffs 20) (A) war-time vs. (B) peace-time? [0.5 pts] B, husbands are away during war-time prevents reproduction 21) (A) no access to birth control vs. (B) easy access to birth control? [0.5 pts] A, no access limits control of family planning
