8.07 Forensic Anthropology (30 Points) Part 1: The Bone Lab List three conclusions that the anthropologist in “The Bone Lab” video (linked on the Task page) made about the deceased person. What evidence did they have for each of these conclusions? (9 points: 1 point for each conclusion and 2 points for each evidence) Conclusion Evidence 1. Height approximation Based on the length of the femur using estimated calculations 2. Cause of death Based on the gunshot wound evidence found in the skull 3. Possible trajectory Based on the keyhole entry would to the skull they can determine trajectory of bullet for example where was the shooter standing when the shots were fired 4. Do you think it would be easier to determine the approximate age of an adult or pre-adult skeleton? Explain which method you would use to do so. (3 points) Write your response below using complete sentences. I would use the method of teeth examination to determine age (if available) . I think it would be easier for children. To me it would be easier to look for instances of teeth that have not developed to the next stage. If the teeth bones do not have the next stages of growth to me it would be easier to see what's missing to determine age. Part 2: Estimating Height 5. A femur from the remains of a male victim is determined to be 41.5 cm. Approximately how tall was the man? (4 points) © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021

In this section, we will use data of tibia length from several people of known height. We can then determine an approximate height from the tibia length of an unknown victim. Tibia Length (cm) Height (cm) 25.3 138 21 126 30 150 35 161 42 179 6. Use the graph to determine the height for a person with a tibia length of 32 cm. (2 points) 156.25 7. There is a missing male who is 175 cm tall. A body has been found that may belong to him. If so, how long would you expect the tibia bone to be? (2 points) 41 cm long © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021
