"Since the 1950s, anthropologists have been vocal about biomedicines indifference to the
medical values and practices of native or ethnic groups"(Press, 1997). "Groups that are racialized
as Black, Indigenous, and Latinx experience higher adverse health outcomes due to multiple
overlapping forms of social margins, bias, and racism" (Blackwell, 2021). Increased research has
been done on generalized clinic/patient value differences and doctor/patient communication.
Anthropologists have focused on biomedical values, doctor/patient clashes over disease and
illness dichotomy, sexism, ageism, behavioral rituals in surgery or other procedures, and training
physicians and nurses.
Total Quality Management (TQM) was introduced as a philosophy and method in product and
process improvement; it was looked at as a miracle cure for American Businesses. A new system
for change was introduced in the 1980s by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO). With new cultures growing in America, it was important for healthcare
to become familiar with the culture. "Culture ("hospital culture," "corporate culture") is proposed

as the key to change" (Milkovich, 1991). According to Crapo, based on U.S Census information,
the White life expectancy was 79.0 years in 2010, 3.9 years more than that of African Americans.
This was due to African Americans' access to proper medical treatment, poorer neighborhoods,
low-class jobs, and high unemployment rates.
Summary of your source for Part II (include one to two paragraphs, totaling at least 300
words). Enter your summary in the space below.
In this article, the author has conversations with 42 patients, 11 relatives, three doctors,
and 11 nurses in a Kenya cancer ward. Most people in Kenya are poor, with little access to
proper medical care. "Healthcare is provided to Kenyans by the government, non-governmental
organizations, mission hospitals, and private sectors" (Mulemi, 2008). Medical stay,
unfortunately, does not often pay attention to patient views and experiences of treatment. Cancer
wards are small in Kenya. There are five rooms with a total capacity of 32. The first three rooms
are reserved for female patients, while the other two are for male patients. The cancer ward helps
care for patients with neck, breast, cervical, colon, rectal, prostate, esophageal, and gastric
cancers. The stay can be between seven to 15 days and some even up to a month.
Cancer is rising in Kenya. Oesophagus, prostate, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, liver, and
stomach cancers are the most common in men. Cervical and breast cancers are most common in
women. People travel to this cancer ward from all over, some up to 600 kilometers. There must
not be too many places that treat cancer. Patients usually speak Kiswahili or English, but
interpreters are available to those who speak neither. Many people there look at cancer as the end
of the road, but doctors continue to encourage patients by ensuring them that cancer can be
cured. Some people have to wait long periods for treatment due to the small capacity of the
cancer ward. Some people are even too poor to afford hospital admission and treatment. Because
death is seen so frequently in the ward, patients worry that they won't make it.
5) Write a working thesis statement based on your sources. Refer to the Writing Center’s
Thesis
Generator
resource and the
Final Introduction Example
, available in your online course.
Working Thesis Statement:
While accepting our own culture is normal, people should keep an open mind when learning about
new because it helps to understand more about new cultures, learning social differences, and helps
us to relate from different perspectives.
