Report
Carcharodon hubbelli Carcharodon hubbelli, also known equally Hubbell's white shark, is an out, species of whitened shark that evolved 'tween 8 and Five million days agone during the Belatedly Miocene to Betimes Pliocene epochs. This shark is a transitional species, showing average features between the extant great whitened shark and the dodo white shark, Carcharodon hastalis. C. hubbelli appears to follow geographically restricted to the Pacific Ocean, with fossils of C. hubbelli recovered from Peru, Chile, California, and New Zealand. This exclusive dispersion suggests a Pacific descent for the great whitened shark. This shark was named in laurels of Dr. Gordon Hubbell (the scientist who cured the specimen from a husbandman who establish it in 1988) in acknowledgment of his part to shark paleontology and for donating the specimen to the Fla. Museum of Innate, Account inwards 2009. It was around the size of the modern great snowy shark, reach 4.9–5.1 metres (16–17 ft) long. Its ontogenesis v shows that it grew astatine a slower rate than the modern outstanding v shark. Teeth Only one associated teeth of C. hubbelli is known (UF 226255), with a tot of 222 teeth (and 45 vertebral centra). It was cured from the Pisco Formation of Southern Peru. The tooth morphology is most like to the extant great white, inward having labiolingually flattened triangular cusps with serrate edges. The teeth differs from the extant species n having a distally-inclined upper intercede tooth (it is mesially-inclined in the great white). The serrations ar besides qualitatively different, being finer and belittle n size apically (towards the tip). As a transitional species, C. hubbelli possesses a mix of features submit in extinct white sharks s C. hastalis and in the extant white shark, C. carcharias. The distal inclination of the intercede tooth is feature of C. hastalis, but the presence of serrations (though not full developed) and a s amphetamine anterior tooth bigger than the lour second prior, tooth ar characteristic of C. carcharias. Bionomics The evolution of serrated edges along the teeth of C. hubbelli evoke a displacement inward its diet to count more on a mammals as in C. carcharias. The os of a scavenged mysticete whale with a tooth of C. hubbelli embedded within it supports this hypothesis. References
