AP Psychology At the Intersection of Afro-Latinidad and Gender As an imposed term, Hispanics/Latinos – individuals who can trace their ancestry to Latin America and the Caribbean – can be of any race. While the common narrative is that Latinos occupy a space between White and Black, and scholarship calls for moving beyond the Black-White binary, some Latinos reify the Black-White binary. Political scientist Yalidy Matos will examine how U.S. Latinos have aligned with and/or complicated the color line in the U.S. and the political consequences of such alignment. With a focus on America’s racial status quo, Matos will investigate the following questions: 1) How does diversity among Latinos’ influence their position in America’s hierarchy? 2) What role does this positioning play in Latinos’ political behavior to avow or disavow the racial status quo? What are the political consequences of self-identifying as white/black/Latino, etc. Work in progress on Latinas. Intersection of gender and race. Black and Latin authors relied on. Feelings of inferiority as a Latiness. Considered whether Black Latinas thought about their identity. What does it mean to be Afro-Latina or Black Latina? Do they see their identity as just “black”? What are the political consequences (policy implications, coalition in solidarity politics, coalitional politics) The conceptualization of Latinos as a mixed people obscures their identity. Mestiza? Sahi-racial identity is a mixing of European, indigenous, roots. Skin color → the lighter you are, the better you’ll be doing in life. The socialization of racial ideologies and the practice of colorism have political consequences especially for women. Familial rejection if the ideology isn’t met. First set of hypotheses: Given the racial ideologies that Latinas might have internalized, experienced, or rejected. Self-identification will vary among Latinas, because Latinas vary. They are heterogeneous. Some Latinas might have rejected the racial ideology. Second: Skin color will mitigate self-identification as Afro-Latina. Afro-Latina perceive their skin color as darker, and are more likely to identify as Afro-Latina. Latinas that think racism doesn’t exist (measured by asking if racism is rare or whites don’t have advantages) are less likely to self-identify as Afro-Latina. Higher levels of racial resentment will increase identification and experiences of racial discrimination will influence the identity among Latinas. Those who experience more racial discrimination are more likely to self-identify as Afro-Latina. A lot of this comes from the group consciousness theories. Social identity theories. Social categorization theories. Individuals are either self-identifying as one thing. Being prescribed, someone else is prescribing you in identity. Whereas group consciousness is the one with the most, the strongest predictor of political behavior. To be Afro-latina for some might not be political. It may just be something that Identifying as a Latina, a Black Latina, and an Afro-Latina should be separate. We know less about the sub-groups of Latinos. A quarter of the Latinos in the U.S. identify as Afro-Latino. Only 18% of those identify as black. By doing so, they have political awareness. They know what it means to be Black in the U.S. 38% identify as white??
Social identity and social categorization theory At the heart of intra-group relations is the want to be involved in a group. Why do some Afro-Latinos identify as white and not black? Because the motivating factor is to be a part of a positive group. “Low-status” groups try to find a “good” or a “positive” group to identify with. Afro-latinos may have internalized racism keeping them from identifying as black. The larger book project also looks at social justification theory. SJT is the process by which existing social arrangements are legitimized even at the expense of personal and group interests. Some Latinos vote Republican, that might be perceived as against their interest and SJT supports that. Because Afro-latinas and Black latinas exist outside the bounds of prototypical latinas… What are the political consequences? Thought about the work that goes into Latinas having more coalitional politics. Latinas are more coalitional. Where does that put afro and black latinas? Latinas identify in high numbers as women of color. Afro-latinas supercede non-afro-latinas in this identification. WHen looking into women of color candidates, afro latinas supercede non-afro latinas in wanting more women of color candidates. Given that black afro latinas are non prototypical latinas, the hypothesis is that black afro latinas will feel more group consciousness with black americans over latinos as a group. Self-identified non-afro latinos will be the least likely to have solidarity politics compared to afro latinas and black afro latinas in that order. Used 3 different surveys. To triangulate. 2016 2020 cmps. Non-black and non-afro latinas → have afrolatinas. Those individuals said yes to afro latina and yes to black. Support for BLM Do you strongly support BLM? Activism? Police force? Well-being, discrimination against women? Black Afro-latinas better identify themselves when feeling racial discrimination. Personal discrimination, positive group link, feelings of racial discrimination against latinos all positively link to self-identifications of afro latina. Latina linked fate is negatively associated with afro-latino identification. So, overall, being born in the U.S., believing that there is racial discrimination against Black Americans, and experiencing personal discrimination based on skin color are the strongest predictors of identification among Afro-Latinas. Overall Findings Darker skin color discrimination, personal, racialized, influenced afro-latina compared to non afro latina. Personal identification of afro latina leads to greater solidarity with the BLM movement. Further conclusions at 40 → onward.
