Step 1: B cell selection

In the primary lymphoid organs, such as lymph nodes and spleen, the selection is positive and negative for both B and T cells. For a cell to survive positive selection, antigen receptor signalling is necessary. The pre-B receptor binds its ligand, which causes the selection of developing B cells favourable. Cell death is the outcome of binding to the receptor, known as negative selection. If immature B lymphocytes bind self-antigens, they are negatively selected.
