Natalie Bergner Week 1 Textbook of International Health, Chapter 1 1/5/23 Anthropology and Public Health, Introduction Reimagining, Chapter 1 The art of medicine, Has COVID-19 subverted global health? The theme of the textbook readings was very introductory and informative, they focused on the vocabulary to be used further into the books as well as how anthropology and medicine can be used in tandem to increase the effectivity of global health practices. One thing from the reading that I am particularly interested in is illness experiences, as they consider the cultural, social, and religions aspects that go into one’s diagnosis and treatment of illnesses outside of traditional medical practices. In what ways are traditional and alternative medical practices already being used together to provide better suited treatment for one’s belief system? My initial response to the reading was a little bored, I have previously taken an introductory medical anthropology course so much of the reading was review. However, the article on Covid-19 was very interesting to me as it discussed many of the topics within medical anthropology and applied them to the disparities of treatment during the pandemic. As the rise of Covid-19 occurred so recently this was the first reading I have read about the global treatment plan and its ineffectiveness in poor countries. The Covid-19 reading discussed much about the disparities of treatments and equipment and how they must be considered when determining a proper solution. The reading described the encouragement and popularity of lockdowns as a solution to reduce the spread of Covid. However, in poor countries such as India, quarantines stunted the treatment of not only covid but other diseases as well, overall worsening the effects of the pandemic.
