How do Anthropologists define "Marriage" and why is it nearly Universal? Describe the patterns of Marital Residence we have discovered through cross-cultural analysis. Based on your reading of the text, what is the relationship between specific Marriage, Residence Patterns, and Kinship systems in a given culture? (Present a logical argument. Support your position with specific examples and details from the text.) Anthropologists define marriage as a socially approved sexual and economic union that is usually between a woman and a man that is thought to be a permanent relationship (Ember). The 5 patterns of marital residence are patrilocal, matrilocal, bilocal, avunculocal, and neolocal residence. Patrilocal residence is when the sons stays and the daughters leave so the married couple lives with the husband’s parents (Ember). Matrilocal residence is when the daughters stays and the sons leave so the married couple lives with the wife’s parents (Ember). Bilocal residence is when either the son or daughter leave so the married couple lives with the wife’s or husband’s parents (Ember). Avunculocal residence is when both the daughter and son leave but the son takes his wife and lives with his mother’s brother (Ember). In a neolocal residence the sons and daughters leave and the married couples live away from relatives on both sides (Ember). To me the relationship between marriage, residence patterns, and kinship in a culture is that each one builds upon the other. First comes marriage and through the process of the marriage kinship is built between both sides, then the married couple choose where the want to reside via one of the 5 patterns of marital residence.
