I believe stretching serves many purposes in many different settings; overall, stretching is a way to increase range of motion as well as warm up muscles before strenuous physical activity. As mentioned in the article, “Stretching During Warm-Up: Do we have enough evidence?”, Knudson discusses the range of motion increase as a benefit of stretching as well as stretching prior to performing activities that will strain joint-muscle complexes than normal range (Knudson, 1999). Unlike Knudson, I think stretching should be performed during the warm up period before activity or even independent from a workout. Possibly influenced by my long time participation in activities like dance and baton twirling, I am a habitual pre-workout stretcher. I feel like I am able to have a more productive work out and experience less muscle soreness after. Further research states stretching as a warm up can allow the fluid in synovial joints, used for most exercises, to become less viscous after a period of rest. The synovial joints contain synovial fluid which lubricates the joint to improve overall function and range of motion for the joint; it is understandable that warming up those joints would result in less wear on the joints since there would be proper lubrication (Betts et al., 2022).
