Anatomy & Physiology A Pickle Autopsy Lab Worksheet Material Needed: 1. Pickle (or other dissectible fruit or vegetable) 2. Cutting Utensil: Plastic knife (or Scalpel/single edge razor blade with permission) 3. Dissection table: A surface to cut on that is soft enough to pin fruit parts to (possibly cardboard) 4. Pins/Labels: To hold cut and identify items 5. Digital Camera: Or a smart phone with camera, for uploading images of your work Procedure: 1. Body Exterior: A. Draw or paste images of the labeled dorsal and ventral sides of your subject below. Add the directional labels medial , lateral , superior , and inferior . *Draw a face on the ventral side to keep things straight. 2. Body Planes: A. Which body plane would divide your subject into right and left portions? Sagittal plane B. Which body plane would divide your subject into anterior and posterior portions? Frontal plane C. Which body plane would divide your subject into superior and inferior portions? Transverse plane 3. Quadrants: A. Draw or paste an image of your subject with the properly labeled abdominal quadrants: Right Upper Quadrant ( RUQ ); Right Lower Quadrant ( RLQ ), Left Upper Quadrant ( LUQ ), Left Lower Quadrant ( LLQ ). B. Quadrants ©2022 Michigan Virtual Last Updated on 5/17/2022 2
4. Body Interior: A. Ensure the ventral side is showing. Make a “Y” incision. Start by making a “V” at the shoulders of your specimen moving toward the midline. Then make a sagittal cut extending inferior from the “V” to complete the “Y”. (See diagram below.) B. Label the cranial cavity “A”, the thoracic cavity “B”, the abdominal cavity “C”, and the pelvic cavity “D”. Draw or paste images of your labeled subject below. 5. Conclusion: A. Now that you have completed the autopsy, now you must determine your subject’s cause of death. Your findings must minimally include 10 regional terms or directional terms . This can be creative, but the information you present must maintain anatomical accuracy. One day Mr. Pickles was sitting on a bench next to a river when the wind knocked him over and he fell in a dorsal position with his head above the water. As he was floating down the river, he got turned over to a ventral position when a stick hit him in his abdominal cavity. He was panicking and trying to twist his little body over so he could breathe again. Suddenly, he fell down a waterfall and hit rocks below. He hit the rocks first on his right upper quadrant, then his left upper quadrant, then his left upper quadrant, then his left lower quadrant. He finally landed back in the water. An otter was swimming by and its tail smacked Mr. Pickles in his pelvic cavity. Once the otter left he smacked into a tree hitting his cranial cavity causing him to be very dizzy and he threw up. Then a little girl picked up Mr. Pickles by his thoracic cavity and he ended up tragically passing away. ©2022 Michigan Virtual Last Updated on 5/17/2022 4
