Criminal Justice Profession Critical Incidents Ongoing Job Factors Line-of-Duty Deaths Self-Inflicted Deaths The Criminal Justice Profession that I chose to research is Corrections Officers. Numerous critical incidents can create stress for Corrections Officers. These critical incidents include prison riots, disruptive behavior, disease outbreaks, prison gang activities, the presence of contraband, and persons with mental illness. These incidents could also cause physical injuries like chronic neck pain, chronic back pain, chronic knee pain, heart disease, high blood pressure, etcetera. These physical injuries often lead to more stress for Corrections Officers due to not being able to perform their jobs as well as they did before the injuries. (Risky Business: Part 1 of 2 in a Series on Correctional Officer Wellness | National Institute of Justice, n.d.) There are also numerous ongoing job factors that may create stress for Corrections Officers. These job factors include role ambiguity, role conflict, demanding work obligations, poor leadership, lack of trust or support, no input into decision-making, inadequate resources and employee benefits, extended hours, coworker conflict, and understaffing. Staff that are overly tired and high turnover rates lead to Corrections Officers not being able to adequately watch over incarcerated individuals. Conflict between coworkers can also cause stress and distraction in the workplace. (Risky Business: Part 1 of 2 in a Series on Correctional Officer Wellness | National Institute of Justice, n.d.) There are multiple causes of line-of-duty deaths that impact Corrections Officers. 113 Corrections Officers were killed in the line of duty between 1999 and 2008. They also make up 10% of work-related deaths in law enforcement. These causes include guns, illness, traumatic injuries, and terrorist activities. Between 2005 and 2009 guns accounted for 23% of Corrections Officer's deaths. Illness (specifically Covid-19) accounted for more than 130 deaths in 2020. Traumatic injuries caused 36% of deaths between 1999-2008. Terrorist attacks caused two officers' deaths between 2001 and 2017. (Correctional Officer Deaths Statistics: Market Report & Data • GitNux, 2023) Between 2016 and 2022, more than 1,200 criminal justice workers died by suicide. Self-inflicted deaths are also fairly common in this profession. Suicide rates are 39% higher than the general working-age population. (Risky Business: Part 1 of 2 in a Series on Correctional Officer Wellness | National Institute of Justice, n.d.) Sixteen percent of all Correctional Officer deaths were attributed to suicide. Suicide rates are so high for Correctional Officers for various reasons. The stress of the job caused by things they see happen, long hours, coworker conflict, understaffing, etcetera all contribute to the suicide rates.
