Societal Trend in Criminal Justice Brief Description How the Trend Affects the Public The societal trend in criminal justice that I chose to discuss is how bail reform impacts the criminal justice system and the community. Bail reform impacts the criminal justice system and the community in numerous ways. It is argued that bail places an undue burden on poor people when arrested under suspicion of committing a crime. Due to this undue burden, some cities and states have eliminated (through bail reform), or are trying to eliminate, cash bail. This trend is relevant to the field of criminal justice because the court systems (where bail is given) are a major part of the criminal justice system. Multiple different groups of people and parts of the criminal justice field are impacted by the trend. Individuals in some of the communities where bail reform has happened became safer. Six places where bail reform was passed had a decrease in violent crimes within a year. Bail reform also helped individuals working in the criminal justice system, especially jail and prison staff, because it reduced the amount of people incarcerated. 68% of people being held in jails are awaiting trial. (Stemen & Olson, 2023) Bail reform also positively impacts poor people. It ensures that they are released from prison while awaiting trial, allowing them to keep their jobs, homes, custody of their children, etcetera.
