Chapter U6.2, Problem 3E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Three examples of reversible process which are not provided in the book are to be written.

Concept introduction: A reversible process in one that can proceed in both forward and the reverse direction. Many physical and chemical processes are reversible given the appropriate conditions.

Answer to Problem 3E

Three reversible reactions are,

  N2(g)+3H2(g)2NH3(g)

  I2(g)+H2(g)2HI(g)

  N2(g)+O2(g)2NO(g)

Explanation of Solution

The Haber’s process of formation of ammonia is a reversible process. In this process nitrogen reacts with hydrogen to form ammonia.

  N2(g)+3H2(g)2NH3(g)

The reaction of hydrogen and iodine vapour to form hydrogen iodide is also an example of reversible process.

  I2(g)+H2(g)2HI(g)

The reaction of nitrogen and oxygen to form nitric oxide is also an example of reversible reaction.

  N2(g)+O2(g)2NO(g)

Conclusion

The double arrow indicates that both forward and a reverse process can occur.
