What do air-standard assumptions mean?

Explanation of Solution

Analysis of actual gas power cycles is more complex. Hence, to minimize the analysis to a manageable level, the following approximations are made.

These are known as air-standard assumptions. The assumptions include:

  • Ideal gas of the cycle is taken as the air that circulates continuously in a closed loop and regarded as working fluid.
  • The processes are reversible internally in the cycle.
  • The process of heat addition replaces combustion process from external source.
  • Heat-rejection process replaces exhaust process which finally restores working fluid to the initial position.
