Chapter 9, Problem 50E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The number of moles of CO2, the volume occupied by the number moles of CO2 gas, and the number of years required to double the amount of CO2 are to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Mole is the unit for calculating large quantities of small units, such as atoms and molecules.

Carbon dioxide is a colorless and odorless gas.

A small amount of carbon dioxide is essential for sustaining life on the earth.

Answer to Problem 50E

Solution:

a)

The number of moles of CO2 is 2.4×1014mole.

b)

The volume of CO2 produced is 6.3×1015L.

c)

The number of years required to double the amount of CO2 is 240years.

Explanation of Solution

a) Number of moles of CO2 are produced by the combustion of 4×1012Kg of C8H18.

The amount of CO2 present in the atmosphere is 0.04% and the world uses 4×1012Kg of petroleum per year.

The reaction is as follows:

2C8H18(l)+25O2(g)16CO2(g)+18H2O(g).

The equation for the reaction of C8H18 with O2 is as follows:

2C8H18(l)+25O2(g)16CO2(g)+18H2O(g)

The mass of C8H18 is converted into grams as follows:

1Kg=1000gThemassoftheC8H18ingrams=4.0×1012×1000g=4.0×1015g

The moles of C8H18 are calculated using the expression as follows:

Moles of C8H18=GivenMassMolecularMass.

Substitute the value of given mass and molecular mass in the above expression.

Moles of C8H18=4.0×1015gC8H18114.2gC8H18=3.5×1013mole.

From the above equation, 2 moles of C8H18 will produce 16 moles of CO2. Therefore, moles of CO2 will be 216 of the moles of C8H18.

Moles of CO2=216×3.5×1013mole=2.8×1014mole

Hence, the number of moles CO2 is 2.4×1014mole.

b) The volume occupied by number of moles of CO2 gas that just produced.

1 mole of gas occupies 22.4L.

The volume of CO2 produced is calculated by the expression as follows:

Volume of CO2=Moles of CO2×22.4L.

Substitute the value of moles of CO2 in the above expression.

Volume of CO2=2.8×1014mole×22.4L=6.3×1015L.

Hence, the volume of CO2 produced is 6.3×1015L.

c) The number of years it will take to double the amount of CO2 currently present in the atmosphere.

The volume of CO2 present in the atmosphere is 1.5×1018L.

The volume of CO2 present in the atmosphere is 1.5×1018L. All CO2 is produced by the combustion of petroleum. The number of years it will take to double the amount of CO2 is calculated as follows:

Numberofyear=volumeofpresentCO2volumeofCO2produced.

Substitute the volume of CO2 present and the volume of CO2 produced in the above expression.

Numberofyear=1.5×1018L6.3×1015L=240years

Hence, the number of years it will take to double the amount of CO2 is 240years.
