Introduction

Mary Ainsworth developed her theory of attachment in terms of the quality of care that babies receive from one primary caregiver, which is most often the mother. Although this theory has been criticized by some scholars because there are many instances where both parents share equally in caregiving, thus negating the notion that there is only one primary caregiver, Ainsworth has defined three stages of the attachment process.
