While it is well documented that humans have a need for attachment to other humans, only in the last few decades has it been realized that animals have that same need for attachment. Harry Harlow, back in the 1950's, experimented with the concept of attachment with rhesus monkeys. At the time, his findings were groundbreaking to the field of psychology and developmental science.
