Chapter 9, Problem 14PP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures for the isomers A, B, and C of the compound with molecular formula, C5H11 Br are to be interpreted from the given DEPT 13CNMR spectra.

Concept introduction:

DEPT stands for distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer. DEPT 13CNMR is used to indicate the number of hydrogen atoms that are bonded to each carbon while providing the information of chemical shift in a broadband proton-decoupled 13CNMR spectrum. The carbon signals in a DEPT spectrum are classified as CH3,CH2,CH or C accordingly.

Presence of the electronegative compounds like halogens or oxygen or sulfur elements will downfield the signal, i.e., the chemical shift will occur at higher δ than the unsubstituted carbons.

2-Methylpentanal and 4-methyl-2-pentanone are constitutional isomers with the molecular formula C,H,,0. Each shows a molecular ion peak in its mass spectrum at mlz 100. Spectrum A shows significant peaks at mlz 85, 58, 57, 43, and 42. Spectrum B shows significant peaks at mlz 71, 58, 57, 43, and 29. Assign each compound its correct spectrum. `H 2-Methylpentanal 4-Methyl-2-pentanone
