The lattice energies of rubidium iodide and potassium bromide are given. The reason why the lattice energy of potassium bromide is more exothermic than the lattice energy of rubidium iodide is to be determined.

Concept introduction: Lattice energy is the energy required to break an ionic solid and transform its atoms into gaseous ions. Lattice energy can also be defined as the energy released when gaseous ions combine to form an ionic solid. The square of distance is inversely proportional to the force of attraction. Therefore, lattice energy decreases down the group due to increase in atomic size.
