Concept explainers
Coin toss test. Ask two friends to help you repeat the coin toss test. Ask one to toss a fair coin 100 times and record the sequence of H’s and T’s. Ask the other to create a “random” sequence of 100 H’s and T’s without tossing a coin or consulting the first friend. (Have them decide who does which task after you leave the room so that you don know which friend does which task.) Return to the room and see if you can tell which sequence is which.

- Falling Object An object with negligible air resistance is dropped from the top of the Willis Tower in Chicago at a height of 1451 feet. During the first second of fall, the object falls 16 feet; during the second second, it falls 48 feet; during the third second, it falls 80 feet; during the fourth second, it falls 112 feet. Assuming this pattern continues, how many feet does the object fall in the first 7 seconds after it is dropped?arrow_forwardFind the probability of each event. - Roulette American roulette is a game in which a wheel turns on a spindle and is divided into 38 pockets. Thirty-six of the pockets are numbered 1-36, of which half are red and half are black. Two of the pockets are green and are numbered 0 and 00 (see figure). The dealer spins the wheel and a small ball in opposite directions. As the ball slows to a stop, it has an equal probability of landing in any of the numbered pockets. (a) Find the probability of landing in the number 00 pocket. (b) Find the probability of landing in a red pocket. (c) Find the probability of landing in a green pocket or a black pocket. (d) Find the probability of landing in the number 14 pocket on two consecutive spins. (e) Find the probability of landing in a red pocket on three consecutive spins.arrow_forwardIn Example 5, after how many days are 250 students infected?arrow_forward
