The histones refers to the highly alkaline proteins observed in the eukaryotic cell nuclei, which helps to package and order the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) into structural units known as nucleosomes. A nucleosome refers to a fundamental unit of DNA packaging in the eukaryotes, comprising of a sequence of DNA enveloped in a succession of approximate eight histone protein cores.
