Interpretation:

The criterion used to determine atomic radii if the exact outer limit of an isolated atom cannot be measured are to be determined. Also, the difference between a covalent radius and metallic radius is to be given.

Concept introduction:

The atomic radius of an element is the measure of the size of its atoms. It is the mean distance from the centre of the nucleus to the boundary of the surrounding shells of the electrons. But this boundary is not well defined so the atomic radius cannot be measured.

The atomic radius of an atom decreases on moving along the period and increases on moving down the group.
