Chapter 8, Problem 8.29NP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: This is to be proved that a substance having coexisting solid-liquid curve and a negative slope contracts upon melting.

Concept Introduction: All substances can mainly exist in three phases; solid, liquid and gases. These three phases can convert into each other by the application of temperature and pressure such as by heating of solid, it converts to liquid and then gaseous state of matter.

The enthalpy change during the fusion of solid to liquid is called as enthalpy of fusion that is denoted as ΔHfus . Similarly the enthalpy of vaporization involves in the vaporization of liquid to gas is called as enthalpy of vaporization that is denoted as ΔHvap .

Clausius - Clapeyron equation purposed the relationship between the pressure and temperature for conditions of equilibrium between two phases; vapor and solid for sublimation or solid and liquid for fusion.

  lnPfPi=ΔHvapR(1Tf-1Ti)

Here, P is pressure, T is temperature, R is Universal gas constant and ΔHvap is change in enthalpy of vaporization.

(a 4 shows scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of extruded actions of packing bed for two capillary columns of different diameters, al 750 (bottom image) and b) 30-μm-i.d. Both columns are packed with the same stationary phase, spherical particles with 1-um diameter. A) When the columns were prepared, the figure shows that the column with the larger diameter has more packing irregularities. Explain this observation. B) Predict what affect this should have on band broadening and discuss your prediction using the van Deemter terms. C) Does this figure support your explanations in application question 33? Explain why or why not and make any changes in your answers in light of this figure. Figure 4 SEM images of sections of packed columns for a) 750 and b) 30-um-i.d. capillary columns.³
