The diameter of the ductile iron pipe is 4inand the volume flow rate is 0.20ft3/s.

Write the expression for Reynolds number.

NR=VDv.......(I)

Here, Reynolds number is NR, velocity of flow is V., diameter of the pipe is Dand the kinematic viscosity is v.

Write the expression for the area of the pipe.

A=πD24.......(II)

Here, area of the pipe is A.

Write the expression for velocity..

V=QA.......(III)

Here, volume flow rate is Q.

Calculation:

Substitute 4infor Don Equation (II).

A=π(4in)24=π((4in)(1ft12in))24=0.0855ft2

Substitute 0.0855ft2for A, 0.20ft3/sfor Qin Equation (III).

V=0.20ft3/s0.0855ft2=2.34ft/s

Refer to Appendix-A, "Properties of Liquid" at 100°Fto obtain the kinematic viscosity as 3.0×103ft2/s.

Substitute 2.34ft/sfor V, 4infor Dand 3.0×103ft2/sfor vin Equation (I).

NR=(2.34ft/s)(4in)3.0×103ft2/s=(2.34ft/s)(4in)(1ft12in)3.0×103ft2/s=260

Since Reynolds number is 260and it is less than 2000so the flow is laminar.

Conclusion:
