Concept explainers
To answer:
Similarity between the results of Southern blot and DNA microarray.
Introduction:
DNA microarray is composed of single-stranded DNA molecules (ssDNA) as cDNA or genomic DNA, which are attached to the solid substrate such as glass slide, a nylon membrane, silicon chips, or other microarray substrates. It is also called DNA chip as it contains a collection of thousands of various DNA molecules at a specific site on the array. The single array may contain DNA molecules from one or more species. The labeled (tagged with fluorescent) DNA sample is washed over the DNA microarray and the DNA molecule binds to its complementary DNA sequence on the array. The presence of targeted DNA sequence is identified by the development of fluorescence. This technique is used to find DNA or RNA in a sample and to evaluate the expression of genes.
