Concept explainers
To explain: The three different processes that occur during a sexual life cycle that increase the genetic diversity of offspring.
Concept introduction: Sexual reproduction increases the genetic diversity thatenables organisms to survive better in the unfavorable environment. Genetic diversity mainly arises due to the shuffling of chromosomes during the meiosis process. Different combinations of chromosomes at metaphase 1 of meiosis occurring in the gametes are one process leading to the genetic diversity. Crossing over during prophase Iincreases the chance of producing a new combination of genes by exchanging chromosomes.

- Which of the following would not be considered a component of sexual reproduction? Select an answer and submit. For keyboard navigation, use the up/down arrow keys to select an answer a Production of eges and sperm in separate sexes in an animal species b. Gradual acquisition of multiple mutations in a purely mitotically dividing eukaryotic single celled organism Occasional production of diploids through fusions of cells of opposite mating types in a yeast that largely reproduces through clonal mitotic divisions "Alteration of generations" between haploid and diploid organisms in a fernarrow_forwardDescribe three ways variation can be introduced into offspring produced by sexual reproduction.arrow_forwardExplain the paradox and adaptive significance of sex. - What are the advantages and disadvantages of the alternation between fertilization and meiosis in sexually reproducing organism?arrow_forwardDescribe the main differences between asexual and sexual reproduction. Why are both types of reproduction common?arrow_forwardMost sexual organisms are either male or female though some are hermaphroditic. In human beings and Drosophila (fruitfly), the sex of an individual is determined by the kind of sex chromosomes they possess. Males have two types of chromosomes, a big chromosome X and a small chromosome Y while females have only one kind, 2X or XX. The X and Y chromosomes segregate during the formation of mature spermatozoa (sprematogenesis) so that a mature sperm contains only either X or Y. What is the probability of getting an X-bearing sperm? A Y-bearing sperm? How many kinds of ova as to the kind of sex chromosome present can be produced? Determine the probability of getting a boy or girl. Show your calculations.arrow_forward

- One of the advantages of sexual reproduction is that it promotes genetic diversity in the offspring. This is because gametes are produced by meiosis, which introduces genetic variation into the resulting gametes. How does meiosis accomplish this? Describe one way (there are several choices) in which meiosis produces new combinations of genes in gametes.arrow_forwardMitosis and meiosis are both important processes of cell division in the life cycle of a sexual organism.Discuss why both processes are necessary?arrow_forwardWhich of the following is a advantage of asexual reproduction? a.)Same DNA being passed down-NO GENETIC VARIATION IN THE OFFSPRING b.)If parent has genetic disease offspring will have it too c.)Only one parent involved.
