Summary Introduction

To explain: The three different processes that occur during a sexual life cycle that increase the genetic diversity of offspring.

Concept introduction: Sexual reproduction increases the genetic diversity thatenables organisms to survive better in the unfavorable environment. Genetic diversity mainly arises due to the shuffling of chromosomes during the meiosis process. Different combinations of chromosomes at metaphase 1 of meiosis occurring in the gametes are one process leading to the genetic diversity. Crossing over during prophase Iincreases the chance of producing a new combination of genes by exchanging chromosomes. Genetic variations can also occur due to random fertilization of eggs by sperm.

A paradox of sexual reproduction is that despite its being widespread in nature, the question of why it exists at all is still unresolved. What are some disadvantages of sex? What are some consequences of sex that make it so important?
Sexual reproduction results in offspring that are genetically different from one another and from their parents. Describe four mechanisms that produce this genetic variation. Do any of these mechanisms occur in asexualreproduction?
