Concept explainers
To explain: The three different processes that occur during a sexual life cycle that increase the genetic diversity of offspring.
Concept introduction: Sexual reproduction increases the genetic diversity thatenables organisms to survive better in the unfavorable environment. Genetic diversity mainly arises due to the shuffling of chromosomes during the meiosis process. Different combinations of chromosomes at metaphase 1 of meiosis occurring in the gametes are one process leading to the genetic diversity. Crossing over during prophase Iincreases the chance of producing a new combination of genes by exchanging chromosomes.

- Explain the benefits and drawbacks of asexual and sexual reproduction.arrow_forwardIdentify the phenomena of sexual versus asexual reproduction.arrow_forwardFertilization is the fusion of haploid gametes, ovum and spermatozoon, to form a diploid zygote. Discuss physiologic mechanisms in the male and the female that make sure that indeed only one sperm fertilizes a single eggarrow_forward
- The change of successful fertilization is approximately 18% in every cycle. Why does this statistic seem so low? All of the following statements provide a reason as to why the chance of fertilization is 18% every ovarian cycle EXEPT Select one: A. Some Sperm cells are not very motile, while others are formed without a tail. B. If more than one sperm fertilizes an egg, multiple embryos can result. C. Vagina is very acidic, killing many sperm. D. There two fallopian tubes and two ovaries, but only one of them releases an ovum every cycle.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is a advantage of asexual reproduction? a.)Same DNA being passed down-NO GENETIC VARIATION IN THE OFFSPRING b.)If parent has genetic disease offspring will have it too c.)Only one parent involved. No searching for mates d.)Requires more cellular energyarrow_forwardIdentify and briefly describe two ways in which meiosis increases the genetic variability of the offspring.arrow_forward
- Explain why genetic mutations in asexual organisms lead to much more rapid evolutionary change than do genetic mutations in sexual forms. Why might harmful mutations be more deleterious to asexual organisms compared with sexual organisms?arrow_forwardWhat are the general characteristics of sexual reproduction in humans and other vertebrates that are associated with continuous production of many sperm cells but intermittent, finite production of egg cells?arrow_forwardWhat are the three events during sexual reproduction that prevent identical children?arrow_forward
